24 Hour HRCYED – Hardest Reading Challenge You’ll Ever Do – Readathon

Of course I have decided (a couple months ago) to participate in another ridiculous challenge. QWordy’s website has all the details.

This installment worked much better than the second book and me extremely interested in the fourth book which I have an eARC of. I also really appreciated how Ortega used the reveals of this book to explore the very real concept of systemic oppression, in this case with regards to the plight of the spares. I cannot discuss this in detail though without revealing more of the plot. However, I love that Ortega went there and appreciate her

skill in how she developed the characters through the various plot elements.

I struggle with how to review this beautiful, lyrical prose-filled novella. This is my first experience with el-Mohtar’s writing and based on this read, I will definitely pick up her works again. This novella feels like a fleshed-out fairytale in the best possible way, a fairytale that explores relationships both romantic and familial. Basically, I simply enjoyed it and have little critical thought to put in a review.

I continue to enjoy this series and how Oda deepens the characterization of this cast of characters. This particular omnibus was not my favorite, simply because I do not care as much for the panels filled with the fights and this omnibus had plenty. I loved the addition of Sanji as well as getting to know Nami. I definitely will continue.

I picked this up after seeing Ashley @RealmofKidLitComics recommend it and I’m so glad that I did .In this book, Cincinnati is determined to lift the curse on her family, a curse she is sure that they are under due to family history of taking artifacts from whom they truly belong. I think Hellig did a really good job exploring this topic at an age appropriate level. I also appreciated how she developed the new friendship between

Cincinnati and one of the secondary characters. So often in middle grade stories, the characters meet a new person at school and become instant besties – not believable at all to me. I definitely want to pick up more from this author.

I finally found an Ava Reid book that I enjoyed enough to keep. The two main characters exist in a dystopian earth that has become kind of a swamp due to rising sea levels and some sort of radiation. (Some of the details escape me because I read this book way past my normal bedtime during the 24 hour readathon.) These characters end up in a twistedly popular “reality” show where specially designed “angels” aka hunters track

down and kill the prey – people with insurmountable debt who hope to outlast the angel and have their debt forgiven. Obviously our main characters are one of each and a love story develops between the two of them. Reid does a remarkable job making this scenario not only possible but believable. The dystopian setting also provides the possibility of challenging one’s beliefs about the world and how it works. And then that ending comes. I cannot really say anything about it because just about anything would spoil it. I think Reid did a really good job with the ending unlike the other two books I have read written by her. Quite the way to end a 24 hour readathon.
