Yes, I know it’s now June. I was not able to participate when the gym actually occurred in April because of a scheduling conflict (I think it was the Cooper River 10k) so I chose a day in late May and made that my gym day. Here are the four books that I read to complete the prompts.

How does one review mystery/thrillers? This newbie to the genre really has no idea. I enjoyed my experience with this novel and would even go so far as to say that this easily surpassed my expectations for the read. I worried a little at the beginning that Ware would use the unreliable narrator trope because the main character drinks too much but thankfully she steered clear of that. I do not like the unreliable narrator trope. I found
the narrative engaging and some of the twists surprised me although I figured the very last one out. I will definitely consider picking up more Ruth Ware books and others to figure out my taste in this genre.

I always have a fun time returning to this world, especially when the stories have coherence. Also, by this point I have read a good enough number – albeit a bit out of order – to be able to add context to these stories. I hadn’t bought more of these for a while but I’m enjoying them more so I may attempt to either purchase them or check them out from the library.

I loved this first volume so much and cannot wait to get my hands on more. This story is set in a world with magic – although that part was not explored deeply at all in the first volume – that also highly reverse the written word, so much so that they have a library that’s supposed to hold every text ever created, staffed by librarians tasked with finding, preserving, and repairing these works. The main character, a young boy for
most of this volume, does not fit in with everyone around him due to his mixed heritage which give him light hair and skin and “long” ears. He loves reading and gets to go to school because of his sisters sacrifice working three jobs in the slums to pay for his education. The presence – or rather mysterious absence – of a magical grimoire brings some of those librarians to his town which forever changes his fate. I cannot wait to read more.
