Recent Reads #24

Did I remember many of the details from book one due to the expanse of time between reading the two books? Not really but that’s okay. I probably would have understood more but I still enjoyed this complex, mad cap world that Bancroft created. Trying to explain more would likely enter spoiler territory so I’ll leave it there.

(I do not rate memoirs.)
Ta-Nehisi Coates writes so beautifully and powerfully. My words easily pale in comparison to Coates’. All I can do is recommend this book as strongly as I possibly can.

While I appreciated this read and what I learned form it, I did not find the writing engaging. Yes, this book is targeted at a YA audience but even considering that, the narrative read more simplistic than I expected. This was a decent read but not much more than that.

As I attempt to catch up on my ridiculous backlog of books to review, I have to acknowledge that both the time between reviews as well as the frankly ridiculous amount of books that I read this month leave me unable to write reviews with the detail I wish I could and should especially on reviews for ARCs. As far as this book goes, I remember really enjoying how Chen picked the plot back up from the first book in the duology as well

as how she developed the relationships, especially those involving the main character both platonic and romantic. I will definitely continue to pick up books from this author.

I absolutely loved this Bluebeard retelling from Meyer. I really enjoy Meyer’s narrative voice and how she takes liberties with the original content while staying true to much of the major plot beats. I also managed to finish this book hours before the Goodreads Choice Awards dropped, thus increasing my pre-read percentage.

I should have read this months ago, not only because I would have been marginally more successful on my Goodreads prediction reads but also because I adored this third entry in the Legends and Lattes world. While other reviews I have seen expressed disappointment that the story had a different protagonist, a character introduced in Bookshops and Bonedust, I actually liked that. I also really enjoyed the accidental journey trope as well as the quirky little goblin. Also, Baldree brought

out the talking swords. While they could never hold a candle to Nightblood (if you know, you know), I always love a good talking sword. I eagerly await more entries in this world should Baldree choose to write them.
