Recent Reads #27

Brown’s novels always have such fascinating concepts. This one definitely should have worked for me with the similarity to Warehouse 13, one of my favorite shows. Something about the execution, though, keeps the whole story extremely mid and forgettable.

I never expected to read this sequel – or expected it to be published, honestly. Should I have left it unread? Probably. While the sequel tightened up many of the issues of the first book, it did not manage to make me care.

I think I might skip any future Sue Lynn Tan books that appear on the Goodreads Choice Awards list. Every single book she has read (that I have read) has failed to exceed a mid reading experience. I appreciated Tan’s take on the Cinderella myth but struggle to remember anything specific about these characters or the plot, a trait I have found common in all of her books.

There’s nothing objectively wrong with this book. The narrative flows decently well. The authors maintained historicity. Ultimately though, this book is marketed at a popular audience, stays at a surface level, and uses a click bait type title to talk about various aspects of the JFK presidency.

Holm has quite the range. I went into my read of this book right after reading her historical fiction graphic novel series, “Sunny.” I thought that Holm did a decent job setting up the idea of a dystopian survival compound where something seems not quite right. I also did not mind the seemingly unrealistic medical advancement that plays a significant part in the main character’s motivations. The biggest thing that kept me from rating this higher is

the lack of length. So much of the novel, especially the resolution which felt extremely rushed, could have benefited with more pages.
