Pandemic Base Building Week 3 – Finding a New Normal

Monday, 50 minutes, 5.61 miles
I felt pretty good today. My legs definitely had more pep in them than Saturday. I could feel a little bit of soreness in my right shin, something I haven’t had before so I’ll continue to take things easy and focus on recovery. Everything else felt really good and my form felt great.

Tuesday, 65 minutes, 7.12 miles
I did not care for the warmer temperatures but that goes with the territory in South Carolina. My form felt great and despite the heat I felt pretty strong throughout. I did not feel any soreness in my right shin during the run but I did feel it a little as I walked back into my house when I finished my run. I will continue to focus on taking things easy and doing proper recovery.

Wednesday, strength training rest, N/A
I originally planned to keep up the regular plan and head out to Mom and Ellis’ to get some strength training in. As I headed home from school (I had to work a few hours at school since our district set today and tomorrow as paper packet and supply drop offs. Since I have started my admin internship, I need to get hours in) I realized that I still had a lot to do, especially for my grad class which ends Friday and if I drove out to Mom and Ellis’ I would lose that time. So, I will skip strength training this week but pick it back up ASAP.

Thursday, 60 minutes, 6.79 miles
I felt great during this whole run. Resting yesterday for reasons other than fitness seemed to help with the pep in my step. We also benefited from cloudy skies cutting down on direct sunlight and lowering the temperature. Runs in temperatures less than 70 degrees always feel better than the others. Remembering the shin thing from earlier in the week, I focused on my form and felt not even a niggle. I really enjoyed the run.

Friday, 60 minutes, 6.75 miles
We started a little later in the afternoon than usual but I don’t know if that helped or did not. My legs felt a bit tired when I started, not sure why because I got plenty of sleep. It took me a little longer to warm up but I did eventually and everything felt pretty normal. At one point my right lower calf felt a little tight but it loosened up. I will stretch for sure.

Saturday, Half Marathon (for virtual races), 13.49 miles
We started in the middle of the afternoon since Mom and Ellis used the morning to spread a lot of much in their yard. Obviously, not the best time to start a run, especially when the temperature hovers between the high 70s and low 80s. Overall, I felt great throughout the run. At one point Mom swallowed some of her hydration wrong so we had to stop so she could regain her breath. When we did that, I stopped my watch, or thought I did, so when we started running again I restarted my watch but actually stopped it so lost .2 of a mile. Normally, that wouldn’t matter but I have registered for a couple virtual half marathons and needed a 13.1 record to show for it so…I added a couple tenths of a mile to the run. We eventually made it to the end, exhausted but got it done.
