Pandemic Base-building Week 2 – “Path-o-Jen” Time

Monday, 20ish minutes, 2.90 miles
Even though I have run for the previous four days, I still wanted to get a run in today. So I decided use my lunch break to get in a simple out and back to the first intersection on my route which turns out to be about 24 minutes. I felt good. My legs felt just a tad tired but not too bad. This run put the idea of “streaking” in my mind. I may or may not try that. Haven’t decided.

Tuesday, 70 minutes, 8.29 miles
I planned to run with Mom but she realized after she got to my house that she accidentally left her shoes at her house. I offered mine (and so did Grandpa) but since my feet are about twice as big as hers (not really), that obviously would not work. When I stepped outside I thought about going back and grabbing some hydration but the wind ended up keeping the heat from becoming oppressive. I felt pretty good throughout although I did have to pause at the halfway point to tighten my shoelaces even though I try to do that at the start of the run. I also encountered a frustrating recreational bicyclist who decided to ride on the sidewalk (not lawful). As I saw him in the distance, I immediately started contemplating how I could get out of the way. Then he moved towards his left like he was going to ride into the parking lot of the nearby apartment complex to get out of the way. Nope. He just decided to move to the left to get more in my way, apparently. Quite frustrating. I made it back safely though feeling good, much better than I thought I might for my sixth day of running in a row.

Wednesday, 20ish minute run, strength training, 2.91 miles
My legs felt a little tired today during the run, 7th day of running in a row. I probably will not continue the streak past Saturday’s long run. I felt okay, not too bad, just average.
Strength training went well. Mom and I did the same routine as last week, only we did it twice through like we should have last week. If I don’t feel any DOMS after this…I wonder what would make me feel it. I squeezed it in between office hours and my last grad class for the semester.

Thursday, 65 minutes, 7.40 miles
Just before I left on this run, my wonderful grandpa came down and asked me if the route I ran was a “path-o-Jen.” Love it.
I headed out a little earlier than planned to make it in what seemed like a window in the rain predicted to happen all day. That meant that Mom and I did not run together. As I look out the window now, I realized that it hasn’t rained since this morning so we could have run together. Oy vey. I expected my legs to feel a lot more tired, potentially, since today marked 8 days of running in a row. They did not. Of course, they did not exactly have a “spring” but I felt fine, maintaining a 9:10 average pace even telling myself to take it easy.

Friday, 60 minutes, 6.71
I don’t know whether it’s because I ran for the 9th day in a row or the fact that the temperature has gone up a bit but this run definitely felt harder, not crazy hard, but harder. I didn’t like the hills but told myself not to make decisions on the hills. I kept going and feel really good at the finish.

Saturday, long run, 12.15 miles
My legs definitely felt tired today. Ten days of running is my limit. I focused on thinking positively as I ran, especially after negative thoughts about how tired my legs felt started to creep in. I pushed those thoughts away because while they felt tired, they did not feel the kind of tired that I have felt before, the kind of tired that indicates that you should cut your run short. I knew that I would regret cutting the run short. I’m so glad that I didn’t. I kept telling myself that this is part of base building. I want to build up the endurance in my legs and this ten days has done so for sure. I will take Sunday completely off for sure.
