Running Deeper – Week 3 of 16 San Francisco Marathon Training

This week felt solid, especially finishing it off with a fairly well-executed race as workout at the end of the week.

Monday 60 minutes with 30 second hard effort intervals near the end
I had a weird night’s sleep before this run and thus, did not feel motivated to start this run. Since it was Marathon Monday I did not give myself an option of wimping out. Instead, I focused on keeping my form strong and my pace easy, slower than normal. I pushed hard on the intervals at the end and by that time had warmed up enough to absolutely love it! I also finished the day thankful that I ran in relatively nice weather as opposed to everyone in Boston.

Tuesday tempo run
The tempo portion felt a little bit easier than last week. It was still tough of course but I think if I had pushed myself mentally, I would not have paused in the middle of the tempo again this time. I have tempo intervals this week but the next time I have an extended tempo run I want to push myself to complete it as specified. The race Saturday showed me that I could.

Wednesday strength training
Once again, there’s not much to write about this. I continue to concentrate on good form and making sure that the weight level is high enough to stretch me but not too high to risk injury. (Although, I must admit that I usually erred on the “too light” side.)

Thursday 60 55 minutes regular
It took me a little while to get out the door Thursday. As a result, I did not start this run on time. I called it close getting ready even shaving five minutes off the total time. I felt strong throughout this run, really good actually. I did feel my left heel a little. I think that I ran too long in my old shoes which aggravated a little bit of PF, not terrible, but not pleasant either. I also think that running out of time to stretch adequately before this week did not help either. I have been focusing on that this week.

Friday stationary bike
I actually made it to the gym to ride. I almost bailed, especially when Mom did. (She had a long day ahead of her.) The night before I had written down Desi’s mantra, “keep showing up” on a slip of paper and left it on my desk near my bed. When I got up and considered going back to sleep just because I felt lazy, I thought about that statement and headed in to the gym. The ride itself went by quickly, one nice side effect about the internet functioning again. Watching “A Series of Unfortunate Events” helps the time go by quickly.

Saturday 60 minutes + Reedy River 10k
I will let the blog post serve as a recap for this one.

On to another week of training, another week closer to the marathon.
