Travelogues Throwback – Lake District Beauty – June 7, 2011

2020 Jen – Since travel options have diminished a bit lately, I thought I would go back and revisit some old favorites. I originally posted these recaps on my old blog back around the time of travel, nine years ago. I have made some edits but left most of the pictures and text the same.

The trip started Tuesday, June 7 at 5:25pm at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. After a hitch free initial flight,  I enjoyed many late hours in Toronto because my flight to Heathrow was delayed from 11:20pm to 12:45am.

I had enough of a cushion upon arrival though so I arrived in time to catch my train to Windemere in the Lake District. Instead of spending money for a taxi, I walked just over a mile to the B & B, already in love. [2020 Jen – I had all my directions printed out from mapquest ahead of time. I did not get my first iPhone until the month after I returned.]

My room wasn’t much but it was a bed and place to relax. Most of the rooms I stayed in on this trip had this approximate size.

The view from the room made up for what it lacked in size.

After a good night’s sleep and an interesting breakfast (every breakfast came on toast)…

I headed out with the intention of walking a few miles to Hill Top Farm, Beatrix Potter’s home. My directions weren’t very clear but I found the pier to the lake and some lake cruises. I decided to take one since Lake Windemere is the longest lake in England and the scenery looked beautiful.

I sat on top for the unobstructed view and braved the bitterly cold winds, worth it for the views. (I came inside for the return journey to warm up.)

The world’s not tilted. I just have trouble with straight lines.

After the cruise I enjoyed a mocha and a mozzarella and spinach panini from a local (and better) Starbucks-like company, Costa. [2020 Jen – This marks the beginning of my mild obsession with Costa.]

After lunch I thought about finding the right ferry and bus to Hill Top but I didn’t ask soon enough. The lake itself held so many sites that captured my attention. By the time I asked, I had run out of time to get up there and back in time for my train.

Though I didn’t see grand historical things or other landmarks this was my favorite day by far. So long, Windemere!

2020 Jen – Apparently the years help grease the wheels of my verbosity. Let me know. Which style do you prefer?
